Next City: Baltimore Is Setting a National Standard for Diversifying Its Economy.
The key elements of Baltimore’s strategy are inclusive outreach and partnerships, dedicated space for production and retail, and technical assistance for micro-enterprises to grow.
An East Coast real estate firm called SAA|EVI partnered with Central Baltimore Partnership on 1812 Greenmount Avenue, which opened recently to create production space for established Baltimore businesses and help ensure they don’t leave the city. Central Baltimore Partnership, in partnership with MCB Real Estate, is also investing with 22 Lanes LLC in the North Avenue Market for creative product business uses.

Area 405, an artist hub and maker space in Baltimore’s Station North arts district, has been sold to a partnership that plans to upgrade it and continue operating it as an affordable artist community.
The new owner is 405-417 East Oliver Street Partners, a limited liability corporation formed by the nonprofit organization Central Baltimore Partnership and Baltimore-based real estate developer Ernst Valery. The transaction closed today and the sale price was $3.8 million.

The North Avenue Market has a group of new owners, after the market was acquired by a consortium of partners including a variety of stakeholders in the Station North Arts District area of Baltimore City.
The group of partners include community-based non-profit organizations, developers, and artists under the banner of North Avenue Market Development, LLC. The historic building was sold for $3.25 million and includes the transfer of a liquor license from longtime owners Mike Shecter and Carolyn Frenkil.
